The short answer

Gym painting needs a plan for member access, equipment moves, high-touch walls, mirrors, ventilation and reopening. Divide the facility into training, locker, reception and back-of-house zones before choosing schedule or finish.

Account for equipment before quoting

Fitness equipment changes access and wall protection. Record which machines can move, who moves them and which items must stay in place. Mirrors, rubber flooring, lockers, wall padding and signage need protection decisions before work begins.

A gym may have heavy evening use, early-morning classes and weekend traffic. Share the class schedule and cleaning schedule during the walkthrough so the painting plan reflects how the facility actually operates.

Choose finishes around wear patterns

Walls near free weights, benches, change rooms and reception do not wear the same way. Identify scuff-prone and high-touch areas. The finish schedule should name the coating and sheen rather than relying on a generic “durable paint” note.

Sherwin-Williams describes gloss and sheen as factors in appearance and performance. For a gym, that supports a room-by-room finish decision tied to cleaning expectations, lighting and surface condition.

Release areas around the member experience

Create a reopening note for each zone: what is complete, what can be used, what remains restricted and who approved the release. Separate paint completion from moving equipment back, cleaning and full member use.

If a phased plan keeps the gym open, keep members away from active work areas and freshly finished surfaces as required by the site plan. This guide is planning support, not a safety specification.

Keep this for your project

Your planning checklist

  • List equipment moves and protection responsibilities.
  • Share class, cleaning and access schedules.
  • Identify high-touch and scuff-prone zones.
  • Use written zone release notes before reopening.

Can a gym stay open during painting?

Sometimes a phased plan works, but access, ventilation, product timing and member safety must be assessed. Do not assume the whole facility can stay open.
