The short answer
Before accepting a painting proposal for unpainted hot-dip galvanized steel, establish its treatment history and current zinc surface condition. Ask the galvanizer and coating supplier to resolve unknown post-treatments and compatibility. A silver appearance or time spent outdoors does not replace that technical handoff.
Start with the galvanizer's record
For a Saskatoon commercial service-yard gate or exterior screen, collect the fabrication order, galvanizer details and any delivery or treatment records. Confirm that the component is hot-dip galvanized rather than identifying it from colour alone. This guide concerns its first paint specification; previously painted steel needs a separate review of the existing coating layers.
Ask specifically whether post-galvanizing passivation was applied. The American Galvanizers Association warns that passivation quenching can affect adhesion of a later paint system and advises avoiding it when subsequent coating is intended. For an existing component, that warning makes treatment history a supplier question; it does not authorize site staff to remove or neutralize an unknown treatment.

Do not use age or appearance as the release decision
The association's preparation guidance distinguishes newly galvanized, partly weathered and fully weathered zinc surfaces because preparation needs differ. It also warns that visual inspection may not establish whether passivation agents were used. Those points support a condition assessment and, where needed, appropriate specialist testing rather than a guess based on a bright or dull finish.
Provide installation and storage history where known, along with photographs of each component group. Ask the reviewer to record the assessed surface condition, evidence used and unresolved questions. If new and older sections are included together, request an explicit decision for each. A calendar note saying the gate has stood outside is useful background, but it should not silently become technical approval.

Request a handoff between the material and coating suppliers
Send the identified component, treatment information and condition findings to the party proposing the coating. Ask for the preparation rationale and complete compatible system, including any primer. The association recommends consulting the paint manufacturer about compatibility because formulations change. An old job's product name is therefore a question to verify, not a specification to copy.
Make the unresolved item concrete. An illustrative handoff might say that the gate's galvanizer is identified, the post-treatment record is missing, and the coating supplier needs that question resolved before finalizing preparation. Assign an owner for obtaining the answer and keep the affected work on hold. Leave chemical selection, profiling and any destructive testing to the responsible specialists; this article provides no application method.
Accept the specification before the colour transformation
Keep two decisions in the purchase file: technical readiness of the identified galvanized components and the owner's preferred finished appearance. An attractive colour sample can support the second decision without answering the first. Ask the contractor what review evidence will support proceeding and what changes would reopen the specification, such as a substituted component or an undocumented surface treatment.
Once the questions are resolved, retain the supplier response with the preparation and finish schedule. Identify which components the response covers so it is not extended automatically to a later replacement. Bring those records to a property-maintenance painting discussion. Confirm the proposed contractor's capability for the specified system; this guide does not claim galvanizing services, specialist certification or a corrosion-life guarantee for PainterzRus.
Keep this for your project
Your planning checklist
- Confirm hot-dip galvanizing and identify the component supplier.
- Request the post-treatment record and mark unknowns explicitly.
- Obtain a zinc-condition assessment for each relevant component group.
- Resolve preparation and coating compatibility with the responsible suppliers.
- Keep technical release separate from colour approval and retain both records.
Is leaving galvanized steel outdoors enough to make it paint-ready?
Do not treat outdoor exposure as automatic approval. Ask for the actual zinc-condition assessment, treatment-history review and compatible preparation proposal before accepting the painting specification.
